Dirt Rally 2.0 - Colin Mcrae Flat Out Pack

The  DIRT RALLY 2.0 Flat Out Pack was the first team project I worked on in the industry and my contribution consisted primarily of asset placement alongside some reset line work. It was a fantastic introduction into the industry and taught me several skills including working with a large scale team/company, project cloud file management and a core understanding of industry work flow.

Crowd Asset Placement

The DLC consisted of 2 track locations based around Perth and Kinross, Scotland. Prior to working on the Flat Out Pack I went through 3 months of training to familiarise myself with the tools the company used for track creation which in itself taught me a lot about the minute details that are needed when creating a simulation racing game along with understanding intelligent design choices and visual language. The track itself had been sculpted prior to me working on it so the first job I was assigned was Crowd Placement. Below are a selection of images from the track itself showcasing sections of crowd that I placed.

Through the process of simply placing crowd I learned several things about design including realism inside a game space. This was understood through questioning myself about why crowd would stand in a particular location and who they would be standing with, do they have a good eye line onto the track itself and not making the scene itself feel unnatural by having several crowd stand extremely close to one another.

Barrier Asset Placement

Another section of the work I did for the Flat Out Expansion was Barrier Placement. This included start and finish sponsor blocks that set up and finished the race, pole tape to warn drivers of a steep cliff/oncoming object and pole mesh to keep spectators a good distance from the danger of the track. All of these assets needed to be placed appropriately within the driver's eye line as they are manoeuvring the tracks at high speeds. A selection of images can be found below detailing these assets placed in the world.

Working with the sponsor boards was interesting specifically as they layout had to display the boards clearly while feeling rugged and realistic on the harsh landscape. With the start barriers objects like ambulances/roadside vehicles accompanied them all of which I was assigned to place as well.

Working on the Flat Out Expansion was a great intro to the industry for me as it allowed an introduction to industry work flow along with strengthening my communication skills and broadening my skillset in both design and in 3DS Max.
