Shipwrecked: Global Game Jam 2017

Shipwrecked was me and my teams entry for the 2017 Global Game Jam. With the theme being 'Waves' we decided to create a self-building board game where each player had to venture out onto and unknown island after being stranded and collect resources to build a community. Everything else, including the rulebook and full artwork can be found in our game jam entry linked in the image on the left.

Design
Each player chooses one of the 4 characters that were created, each of which has specific stats that help the players along the way. They move turn by turn, working together to build out a board finding resources to bring back the home base they have created. These resources can be used to build other useful buildings such as storehouses, shelters and farms. Once all the resources had been gathered to build these the team survives and wins the game.

Movement and Resources
The movement is determined by a pack of cards each with specific resources on them. Once the player makes a decision on which direction they want to go (North, South, East, West) they take a card from the deck and flip it over in the place they are moving too. It can provide wood and vines for building, food for sustaining hunger or no resource at all. This is also where we incorporated the 'Waves' theme, where at different intervals during the game waves would come and wash away resources that had been revealed blocking players paths and removing the resource from the board.

As one of my few experiences participating in game jams, myself and my team were happy with our entry. Learning to create and develop a game within a short 48 hour window provided me with a great appreciation for design and development and an urge to keep creating.
